UK Family Holidays- on a budget or money to burn
The summer holidays are coming to an end and whether they have been a much needed rest or a stressful few weeks, it will all be over soon. However, despite this you can still find some great places to visit right here in the UK whether you are on a tight budget or can afford to splash the cash a bit.
Whatever your financial circumstances are these places are great to visit and offer a good combination of fun and activities for all the family as well as some stunning scenery to enjoy. There are plenty of destinations throughout the UK so choosing one near you will minimise travel costs. Here are two of the most popular destinations.
North-West: Northumberland
Northumberland is an interesting place to visit as it offers a lot of historical importance to the UK. It was the most northern point of the Roman Empire and Hadrian’s Wall is still a popular point of interest for all visitors. The wall is a verified world heritage site and is interesting for children to visit, especially as many of them study the Romans in school.
Northumberland receives less rainfall than other popular destinations such as Lake District, so although it is always better to visit the area when the sun is shining, you can still wrap up and enjoy the sights of Northumberland.
There is an array of accommodation in the area so depending on your budget you can either stay in one of the traditional styled bed and breakfasts or go more upmarket and stay in the one of the fantastic five star hotels that can be found.
The Midlands: The Peak District
The Peak District is visited by many tourists each year as the diverse mix of great scenery and activities such as mountain climbing, cycling and many other adventure sports make it the perfect place to go. There are plenty of things to do and see for all the family. If you are an active person than you can’t go wrong here as you will never get bored of the activities on offer.
Alternatively, you can take a more relaxed, tranquil route around the Peak District with a walk through the caves, around the nature parks or wildlife parks. You can also take a trip back in time with a ride on a steam train.
Wherever you choose to visit make sure you have fun with the family. Stick to a budget to ensure you do not spend too much and enjoy the sights of the UK.
Truancy and Family holidays going hand in hand
School holidays have finished for most schools now and children all around the country are heading back to school ready for another academic year. As a result of the school holidays ending, the prices of some holiday destinations have begun to decrease with some tempting prices on the market.
However, parents with school children should try to resist the temptation as taking kids on holiday during school time is illegal and can result in fines. In the spring term this year, around 1.6 million were taken due to a family holiday of which only 80% were accepted by schools.
Before you book a family holiday during school term you should check with the child’s school to see if it is ok. If your child is only going to miss a day or 2 then the school may accept as long as it is not during a busy period (for example, an exam period). However, the school is well within its right to reject and expect the child to be at school.
At the moment the government can issue a fine of £100 to parents taking children out of school during term time so carefully consider your options before booking. Travelling abroad on a family holiday can be expensive and would you not be better off saving some money for an extra special one next year?
If your family has their heart set on a family holiday then why not consider holidaying right here in the UK. There are plenty of places where the family can have great fun such as holiday parks where there is fun for all the family with plenty of activities for children and shows in the evening for the adults.
The UK has a lot to offer as a holiday destination with so much culture and superb scenery to take in that many of us did not know even exist. The Lake District is a nice place to visit as it has some wonderful places to walk and enjoy, Skegness is another place where there is always plenty going on.
With a range of destinations in Wales and Scotland to also visit the UK is a great place to visit. Truancy is common in UK schools at the moment but all parents should keep their children in schools despite the lure of a cheap holiday that may be available in the coming weeks.
British Weather is No Match for the Holiday Parks
When we start to look at possible destination for our summer holidays we instantly turn to our bank accounts to see what type of budget is available to us. This budget may turn out to be higher than we first expected but for many people it is lower meaning that we have to make sure that every pound we spend is spent well and that we make sure that our budget stretches as far as possible. If you are one of the many people that may struggle with a family holiday then staying in the UK is a great option.
The problem with family holidays is that finding somewhere that all the family will enjoy is not always the easiest job in the world because each member of the family is going to want to do different things so you are going to have to look for a range of activities. One thing that we have to put up with in Britain is the unpredictable weather we receive. In the past month, the UK has seen some amazing weather where we were experiencing temperatures well into the mid-30s (degrees Celsius) so many people were content with staying in the UK as many people go abroad simply for the weather.
However in recent weeks, the UK weather has taken a turn for the worse and the rain has returned to some parts. This means that the destinations such as the holiday parks that are found around the UK have to come up with plenty of things for visitors to do if the rain starts again. This is no problem at all for the holiday parks in the UK because they have a range of indoor and outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy. Whether you are going to want to relax and enjoy your time away from home or looking to get involved with the activities, you have plenty of options available to you during your time at the holiday parks.
The holiday parks have a great range of activities available to all visitors and if you and your family decide that a trip here is perfect then make sure you find the time to visit as there are special events happening here all the time with special guests appearing on stage so look at the line-up and choose the best dates to visit the holiday parks.
If you are looking for the perfect holiday park for your summer holiday UK then make sure you search online where there are some great deals available.
Five reasons to Holiday in the UK this year
Typically many family holidays in the past have included a flight to a hot country packing out the beaches along with many other like-minded holidaymakers. Further back in time families used to holiday in the UK year in year out.
This year though with a wide array of reasons – not just the financial downturn – many families are opting to holiday here once again. Some of the reasons families have for holidaying in the UK are:
Money is tight
The global financial crisis has meant many families have less money to spend on holiday destinations, as well as this the cost of the Euro means that even when you get to your holiday destination you end up spending much more because of the conversion rates.
Airlines are making flying a chore
The general public isn’t the only one paying the price these days, the cost of fuel and lessened demand for flights has meant many airlines have lost money and either cut back the number of flights or gone bust all together. The cost cutting has meant you may be chargeable for things like checking-in in person and not online, the reduced flights also means you may not have as wide a choice of destinations or suitable dates/times.
The UK prepares for adverse weather
Abroad, if you’re unfortunate enough to experience some bad weather quite a lot of the usual activities such as going to the beach or water park can become rather unattractive with many people opting to shelter in the hotel bar until the sun comes back. In the UK though we are well used to the odd spot of rain during the summer and so many tourist areas actually have a wealth of indoor or wet weather activities and entertainment to make sure you don’t end up sat around waiting for the weather to change.
Shorter travel times
By holidaying in the UK you can reach most holiday hotspots within a few hour’s drive, the disadvantage with holidays abroad is that you’re at the mercy of the airlines with many people losing days off their trip thanks to flight delays and long haul flights. By being able to drive you have some level of control over your departure time and routes should you run into traffic.
A wide variety of activities in close proximity
It’s often the case with holidays abroad that you would have to make a choice: Beach holiday or mountain walking holiday etc. The beauty of living on a small island is that all of our attractions are very close to one another. For instance you could go for a beach holiday in Blackpool and enjoy the beach and theme park, then later in the week a short one hour drive to Knowsley Safari Park north of Liverpool.
The UK has many different holiday resorts that are bound to be enjoying continued popularity this year as these reasons and many others not mentioned are making people holiday in the UK this year.

Lower Normandy Property Guide
Lower Normandy is located on the North Coast of France. To the North is the English Channel and on the East Upper Normandy. To the South, Lower Normandy borders Brittany, Western Loire and Centre regions. A predominantly rural area favoured by British buyers. There are 3 departments: Orne, Manche and Calvados.
Lower Normandy Landscape
With about 600 kilometres of coastline there is a wonderful mixture of cliffs, pebbly coves and long stretches of golden sands – this has always been a popular destination for holidaymakers. The Cherbourg peninsula is renowned for family holidays – the most top destinations being Deauville, Trouville, and Cabourg. The Gulf Stream warms the sea here!
Inland the sparsely populated rural area is home to apple orchards (Calvados) and other fruits. There are many sleepy market towns to wander around and enjoy the local foods – including fresh bread, cheeses, fruits and a glass or two of calvados!
Lower Normandy Attractions
Apart from the many and varied beaches around the coastline, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. The D-Day landings in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 were the focus of the largest and most complex invasion ever attempted. There are many D-Day sites to be visited including:
Memorial at Caen
Remnants of “Port Winston” – an artificial harbour built in England and floated to the bay at Arromanches.
Longues-sur-Mer – fortified German gun emplacements.
Bayeux Tapestry – is a 50 cm by 70 m (20 in by 230 ft) long embroidered cloth which depicts scenes commemorating the Battle of Hastings in 1066, with annotations in Latin. The tapestry presently exhibited in a museum in Bayeux.
Other lovely coastal attractions are Honfleur and Deauville. In particular, Honfleur is a popular destination. A quaint fishing port with a thriving “artist” element and lovely small shops. The restaurants are well frequented too!
Mont-Saint-Michel
This is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area, the wide bay of Mont- Saint-Michel, abutting Brittany and Lower Normandy, claims the strongest tides in Europe. This “Wonder of the Western World” towers above the vast mud-flats that surround it.
Do not miss : Visit to the abbey.
Weather/Climate
Weather is similar to the South of England with distinct seasons. Perhaps slightly warmer and sunnier in the Summer! The countryside is green so it does rain.
Getting there
By road:
From Calais ferry port / Eurostar driving times are about 5 hours. You can travel by Autoroute (tolls) all the way.
By Ferry:
Caen and Cherbourg ports are located in Lower Normandy so you can arrive in the heart of Lower Normandy from the UK. St Malo, Dieppe and Le Havre are also close by.
By Plane:
Dinard (Brittany) – flights arrive form East Midlands, Stansted and Luton. You can also fly to Paris and get to Lower Normandy in 3 hours.
Population
Just under 1.5 million inhabitants
Major Towns
Caen
Caen is famous for its historical buildings built in the time of William the Conqueror, who was buried here, and for the Battle for Caen – fighting that took place around Caen during the Battle of Normandy.
Cherbourg
Cherbourg is a commercial and military port, but none the less one of the most popular ports in France.
Deauville
Deauville is a glamorous seaside resort, symbolising elegance, prestige and sophistication. Nearby the Polo and Horse Racing re-enforces its tradition.
Alencon
Alencon is synonymous with lace and once was the lace capital of Europe. The industry has long since departed and Alencon is now the centre of manufacture for Moulinex! North of Alencon is Sees with its gothic cathedral
Saint Lo
Saint-Lo is perched on a rocky outcrop in the heart of the Cotentin peninsular. The town is surrounded by ramparts and overlooked by the Notre Dame cathedral.
Prices
(August 2006)
Coastal properties are more expensive. Inland village, town and rural properties are much cheaper. Unfortunately the days of bargain barns for renovation are long gone. There is still a strong demand for properties at the cheaper end of the market.
Price Guideline
Apartments: 60,000 euros (Coast)
Farmhouses: 30,000 euros (needs renovation)
Townhouses: 30,000 euros
Coastal Houses: 100,000 + euros

All Inclusive holiday parks ? the new family favourite
Holiday parks have been UK family favourites for many years, many of the most popular and well known resorts have been going since the 1930s and have hosted millions of families vacations ever since. With the dawning of the commercial flight industry many Britons were now able to afford to fly to other countries such as Spain and Greece as well as much further distances like America and Africa, but now it looks like the traditional British holiday park is enjoying a comeback.
For many people the current financial crisis has meant many families cannot afford the steep costs of flying and with all sorts of extra hidden charges on even the budget airlines it’s not hard to see why people are more interested in holidaying in the UK.
The UK family holiday parks tend to be built around having the entire holiday package in one place and that everything is included in the price you pay. This means that not only are you paying for your accommodation and all your meals but all the entertainment and activities are included also.
With them being family holidays it doesn’t mean that all the activities and fun is for the kids, there is plenty of adult themed entertainment with musical acts and comedy nights as well as spas and high rope courses. Of course there’s plenty for children to do exclusively with a wide range of sports and fun activities like bowling and laser quest.
The accommodation options are almost as diverse as the activities with many options available to people going on holiday such as luxury hotels, many with amazing seafront views. Other options include self catered apartments or rustic log cabins, camping and caravanning are also possibilities as the options available vary between the different resorts and companies.
With all your meals arranged for you then there’s extra savings to be had as well as the assurance that you can spend all day enjoying yourself and not have to worry about sorting your dinner in the evening. Those who wish to go self-catered are able to cook their own meals should they wish so in some self-catered accommodation too.
It’s no surprise from reading this how popular UK holiday parks have been and with many people booking summer holidays to these destinations rather than abroad this year.
Have a relaxing end to 2009 with UK Family Holidays
With Christmas and the New Year fast approaching many families may be looking for a great getaway that will entertain the whole family as we head into 2010. With the children off school and many parents able to take time off from work it’s the perfect time like the Summer holidays with the advantage that prices won’t be as scary as the Summer getaways.
Whilst many families will choose to jet away to somewhere warm to forget about the cold weather back home a lot of people have found that the wintery weather has delayed or even cancelled their flights. Whilst a lot of families will try and fight the winter weather, many others are actually embracing the rare white Christmas and holidaying here in the UK.
Despite the roads being a bit treacherous at times it sure beats being stuck in an airport waiting for snow to be cleared or for your flight to eventually arrive. Driving or better yet, taking the train to one of Britain’s famous holiday destinations is probably the most reliable way you’ll get to get away on a family holiday at this time of year.
Some people may think that going to holiday parks or British resorts will be a bad idea with the beaches most likely to be out of commission during the festive season. Well the beauty of many British holiday parks and resorts is that they prepare for all kinds of weather, typically the worst types. As a result there are still plenty of fun and games to enjoy indoors if you’re not feeling brave enough to take part in the outdoor based activities.
The entertainment options at these resorts are also a main attraction with many popular singers, variety acts and other entertainers gracing the stage at these holiday parks. With acts that appeal to young children, adults and even both there is never a dull moment when you are on holiday at the UK holiday parks that can be found in various well known resorts up and down the British coast.
A lot of these holiday parks used to have close down seasons which typically included winter but many families are now looking for breaks at this time of year as opposed to in the summer when it can be busy and expensive. With a greater influence on indoor based activities as well as some outdoor ones these holidays aren’t just for the summer months anymore.
If you’re looking for UK family breaks this winter then check out the festive deals on at family holiday resorts all round the country.

When we want to take the family away for a short or long break planning and researching our options it is important to ensure we get the best deal available. When you are planning to go abroad then this can take months and months of planning before choosing the best airline, hotel and transport. Before you know it you have reached your budget before really getting to your destination.
Making sure you stick to a budget can be quite hard when you are on holiday as you tend to over indulge and you can easily find yourself over your budget. You tend to not realise it until you get home and then it hits that you have spent more than you really could have afforded to. This is one of the reasons why UK family holidays have been so popular recently as they are generally cheaper, involves less travelling and there is generally less hassle.
