Time of year

It probably seems obvious but consider the time of year you are going. You may have got a really cheap deal that seems too good to be true but when you get there every major attraction is closed. Going with friends also means you can share the babysitting duties which can be stressful and exhausting. It is recommended that you get separate accommodation but if you get on really well with the other family there is no reason why you can’t all share.

Things to do

There must be plenty to do, especially for the children. Swimming pools are a must have as they are great fun, due to the weather in-door swimming pools are probably going to be found more commonly but if the pool is outdoor then make sure it is heated. A play area or kids club for the children is really important to entertain them and give you some time to yourself.

Ensure all areas of the resort are well secure with lifeguards around the swimming pool and fully trained employees in charge of the kids club. This will give you the peace of mind required to enjoy your break.

School holidays have finished for most schools now and children all around the country are heading back to school ready for another academic year. As a result of the school holidays ending, the prices of some holiday destinations have begun to decrease with some tempting prices on the market.

However, parents with school children should try to resist the temptation as taking kids on holiday during school time is illegal and can result in fines. In the spring term this year, around 1.6 million were taken due to a family holiday of which only 80% were accepted by schools.

Before you book a family holiday during school term you should check with the child’s school to see if it is ok. If your child is only going to miss a day or 2 then the school may accept as long as it is not during a busy period (for example, an exam period). However, the school is well within its right to reject and expect the child to be at school.

At the moment the government can issue a fine of £100 to parents taking children out of school during term time so carefully consider your options before booking. Take a look at the Cotswolds in the UK and you find quaint village scenes and old world charm – the perfect vacation destination. Traditional holiday options surround you with a backdrop of spectacular countryside and wildlife in abundance. We have always been loyal to taking holidays in the UK, with the Cotswolds being a firm favourite. We choose to stay in traditional Cotswolds cottage rental accommodation, and in truth, have never been disappointed with what we’ve found. Last year we joined our daughter and her family in a modern-designed lodge, with stunning lakeside views.  As our own taste is fairly traditional, it’s not a place we would usually consider – however it’s good to see the Cotswolds is changing to meet the needs of future markets, and we were very pleasantly surprised.

Our luxury lodge was ideal for the family unit, with lots of space for our grandchildren to play and the adults to enjoy the views. Situated just by the Lower Mill Estate, which is teeming with a wide range of wildlife such as butterflies, wild orchids, badgers, beavers, otters, deer; kingfishers, nightingales, egrets and owls, there was much to see and do. Short walks to explore through woodlands and meadows, and secret tracks to discover beside streams and lakes, the whole trip seemed like a mini-adventure for the younger ones.

Outstanding Facilities in The Cotswolds

There’s a spa area and a slate-lined pool to take a dip in – and a convenient little farm shop where you can get those last minute essentials. So, when it comes to the practical things, you can pick up locally sourced seasonal produce and if you arrive late at night or haven’t the time to do the shopping, arrangements can be made for a box of fresh local vegetables and meat to be delivered to your door. Brilliant facilities. Especially for meeting the needs of the younger professional couple or larger family unit that’s looking for more space than an old Cottage would allow. Pretty as they are, quaint pubs are not what we consider a ‘family’ friendly option for our grandchildren.

Looking to the Future – Cotswolds Holidays

Our UK holiday market hasn’t grabbed the attention of our youngsters (I mean the 18-35 year olds) for many decades. I don’t believe that many have ever even considered the UK to take a holiday. As air fuel prices and airport taxes increase year on year, the familiar budget flights will disappear from view. Our European resorts will feel the decline, and our UK destinations will hopefully reap the benefits of a new generation of UK holidaymakers looking for affordable short breaks away. The unique combination of a truly idyllic location, spectacular modernist architecture and an award winning world class on site spa facility, all makes for the perfect holiday destination. The Cotswolds is a gem of a place to visit and never fails to impress. It’s good to see a greater variety of modern, self-catering accommodation in the Cotswolds – that’s kept function and quality in mind, and not compromised on facilities or location.

After several months of deep concern, including a time when the UK Pound sterling rate almost levelled down to parity with the Euro rate, the prospects for holidays in Euro Zone destinations for UK travellers seemed bleak indeed. Traditionally-popular destinations such as Greece, Spain and even France have started to look very expensive. And with the steep dive in the value of the Pound against the US Dollar, many worldwide destinations, such good value when the Pound was worth 2 whole US Dollars, had suddenly become much less attractive.

But this rise in the value of the Pound could still be seen as good news, but also possibly not such good news.

What, for example, are the prospects for UK domestic tourism? The pound having risen to above 1.60 against the US dollar for the first time since November 2008, and looks to be continuing this upward trend. This of course is a good thing for UK holidaymakers planning their annual holiday abroad, but is unfortunate for trade exporters, and unfortunate for the UK domestic tourism business which has been looking forward to a highly lucrative summer. Certainly for the home-based UK traveller, the additional prospect of a sunny long-range weather forecast after two consecutive dismal summers has been a big factor which has driven this optimism.

Meantime of course, the exchange rate was promising to make the UK favourable once again to the US holidaymaker after several years when prices worked against them. Naturally, the rate is unlikely to reach the 2 dollar threshold again this summer, so the year-on-year value for incoming tourism remains good – but not as good as some had hoped.

With any recession, the choice of holiday destination becomes much more price-focussed, of course. There are a large number of families who will always insist that a holiday should comprise guaranteed sunshine, a definite change of culture, and a complete change from the familiarity of home. For these holidaymakers, the decreased value of their holiday Pound means a more adventurous look beyond the Euro Zone and into destinations such as Turkey – now massively popular – and Egypt, which is a country which has worked hard on its resort infrastructure in recent years, to complement the perennial attractions of it ancient monuments and history. Also on the radar these days is Morocco, another country where the infrastructure has improved amazingly in recent years and which now has a proliferation of cheap flights to various cities including Agadir and Marrakech. The efforts by the tourism offices of such countries to attract new visitors are being rewarded as their promotional messages fall on the fertile imaginations of otherwise cash-strapped holidaymakers. Thus the currency values spell good news for them.

On balance, the strengthening of the Pound is a concern for the UK holiday business, but trends for the industry this summer are definitely up. On the other hand, there is every likelihood that further increases will trigger some late booking activity for traditional Euro Zone countries – but only if the sun refuses to shine as has been promised. But meantime, the longer-term future of tourism to non-Euro zone countries will have benefited greatly, such countries having found new customers this year in the face of changing currency values.

A lot of families will be hard pressed for money this year, with Christmas just around the corner too money for next year’s holiday could easily be getting burnt up before we even get a chance to plan where we would like to go.  Many families are resigned to the thought that they may not be able to afford the annual beach holiday on the Mediterranean next year, some may have had to stay at home this year too but fortunately staying at home isn’t nearly as dull as it sounds.

Far from it, holidaying in the UK has become a new craze with its own designated phrase: Stay-cationing” more and more people are holidaying in the UK not only because we are starting to get much better weather especially in the spring time but there are so many activities and family friendly holiday parks around the country that can keep the kids amused and the adults some time to relax and enjoy themselves away from the stresses of work.

Flying has become a major pain in recent years with airlines going bust and piling on the penalties if we don’t check in online and other crazy requirements.  Being able to load up the car or take a train to our holiday destination is both cheaper and much less hassle (as long as you avoid any traffic jams).  The travelling times will be much shorter too meaning there will be plenty of time for relaxing.

UK holiday parks have been the biggest winners in the current credit crunch as they have had immense numbers of families booking holidays this year.  This influx of business means they are now already adding more accommodation and more entertaining acts and activities for next year’s holiday crowd.

Our yearly trip abroad is under threat, threat from the groups of people who tell us we shouldn’t be flying in aeroplanes and that we’re damaging the environment. A major UK holiday company is expanding its operations in Malta as a response to increased demand.

The news from MyTravel comes after an agreement with Air Malta to increase flight capacity to the island for its customers. The MyTravel Group, one of the best known and popular UK holiday companies, includes Airtours and Direct Holidays.

The Malta Tourist Authority have greeted the news by saying that the holiday company are increasingly aware of Malta as a holiday destination and that visitor numbers would be increasing in 2007.

A Malta destination guide were as surprised as anyone that MyTravel were increasing capacity for Malta.

’2006 has not been a good year for the Malta tourist industry’, they say. ‘Overall figures could show a drop of around 100,000 visitors in 2006 compared to 2005. There hasn’t been much optimism lately that 2007 will be a lot better for the island, but there are new low cost flights which could help stabilise the number of holidaymakers next year, and with Air Malta doing good promotions and starting a new route from Liverpool perhaps next year will see a long awaited turnaround in the island’s fortunes.
