Dog Friendly Hotels in the Lake District

It is estimated that there are around 27 million pets in the UK equating to 43% of UK households having at least one pet. In the current economic climate, how can tourism businesses exclude such a high proportion of the market?

Sending a pet to a kennel whilst you are on holiday can be inconvenient as not everyone has a kennelling centre near them. Kennelling and pet sitting services can be quite expensive almost doubling the cost of the holiday. Another and perhaps the biggest reason why pet and dog friendly hotels are appealing is that many owners hate the thought of having to leave their dog or pet when they go away. Taking a dog abroad has its problems with quarantining etc but if the holiday is in the UK, why not take your pet along? Pets are often a large part of the family so leaving him or her for a week can sometimes be quite upsetting. In fact, some even let pets go free which makes taking a pet with you far cheaper than kennelling.

It is not always appropriate or right to take a pet on holiday should the destination, type of accommodation or the activities on the holiday not be suitable for a pet. The Cumbria – Lake District on the other hand is one destination with a great choice of activities and that both the family and Fido with enjoy equally. It is now far easier to take your pet away with you without compromising on the choice of holiday. In fact, there are now pet friendly hotels which a few years ago, was almost unheard of.

Many hotels in the UK and the Cumbria – Lake District specifically exclude dogs and pets of all sorts from their premises. However, some hotels welcome all well-behaved pets to enjoy a holiday with their owners. Some dog friendly hotels in the Lake District offer walking services, special bed linen and beds and food.

UK Family Holidays- on a budget or money to burn

The summer holidays are coming to an end and whether they have been a much needed rest or a stressful few weeks, it will all be over soon. However, despite this you can still find some great places to visit right here in the UK whether you are on a tight budget or can afford to splash the cash a bit.

Whatever your financial circumstances are these places are great to visit and offer a good combination of fun and activities for all the family as well as some stunning scenery to enjoy. There are plenty of destinations throughout the UK so choosing one near you will minimise travel costs. Here are two of the most popular destinations.

North-West: Northumberland

Northumberland is an interesting place to visit as it offers a lot of historical importance to the UK. It was the most northern point of the Roman Empire and Hadrian’s Wall is still a popular point of interest for all visitors. The wall is a verified world heritage site and is interesting for children to visit, especially as many of them study the Romans in school.

Northumberland receives less rainfall than other popular destinations such as Lake District, so although it is always better to visit the area when the sun is shining, you can still wrap up and enjoy the sights of Northumberland.

There is an array of accommodation in the area so depending on your budget you can either stay in one of the traditional styled bed and breakfasts or go more upmarket and stay in the one of the fantastic five star hotels that can be found.

The Midlands: The Peak District

The Peak District is visited by many tourists each year as the diverse mix of great scenery and activities such as mountain climbing, cycling and many other adventure sports make it the perfect place to go. There are plenty of things to do and see for all the family. If you are an active person than you can’t go wrong here as you will never get bored of the activities on offer.

Alternatively, you can take a more relaxed, tranquil route around the Peak District with a walk through the caves, around the nature parks or wildlife parks. You can also take a trip back in time with a ride on a steam train.

Wherever you choose to visit make sure you have fun with the family. Stick to a budget to ensure you do not spend too much and enjoy the sights of the UK.

Family Holiday ideas this year in the UK

Every year parents face the dilemma of keeping their children entertained over the summer holidays, as well as making sure they spend their time off school productively they also want to go away on holiday where they can lounge in the sun whilst the children play on the beach or by the pool.

This situation may be familiar to many but this year it’s been made worse by the financial crisis with many larger families unable to afford the annual trip to the Mediterranean or wherever their annual holidays normally take place.  The hassle of flying is now becoming a growing concern for UK tourists especially families with young children, it all makes the checking in and the various added security measures a major stumbling block for your family vacation.

This year however many families are taking advantage of the rare UK sunny weather and vacationing in the United Kingdom.  There are lots of activities that could rival many typical package holidays to Greece or Spain meaning that by choosing to holiday in the UK you won’t be compromising on the fun.

For instance there are many beach resorts dotted around the coastline of our island country with many well known seaside towns such as Blackpool, Bognor Regis and Skegness, Skegness can actually provide the traditional British seaside experience in safe European Blue flag awarded beach guaranteeing safe water and beach conditions for children.

Many other popular activities in these resort towns include mountain bike riding, which is great through the British countryside or one of the many dense forests.  Further inland there are many rocks and crags waiting to be climbed or abseiled down. Nature hikes to the top of the many hills and mountains in locations such as the Lake District can really give you some great views as well as coming face to face with much of the wildlife and sights the UK countryside has to offer.

The UK has a roaring tourist trade with many foreign tourists flocking to our country every year, as well as the many history-rich castles, ruins and museums there are plenty of new tourist attractions such as the many theme parks like Thorpe Park and Alton Towers hidden away in the English countryside.

It’s because of the roaring tourist trade that there are many hotels and accommodation options throughout the country.  In the city there’s plenty of self contained apartment style hotels for those looking to enjoy a city break, or if you’re venturing off into the countryside then there are holiday cottages and caravan parks for those looking for a more peaceful stay.

Truancy and Family holidays going hand in hand

School holidays have finished for most schools now and children all around the country are heading back to school ready for another academic year. As a result of the school holidays ending, the prices of some holiday destinations have begun to decrease with some tempting prices on the market.

However, parents with school children should try to resist the temptation as taking kids on holiday during school time is illegal and can result in fines. In the spring term this year, around 1.6 million were taken due to a family holiday of which only 80% were accepted by schools.

Before you book a family holiday during school term you should check with the child’s school to see if it is ok. If your child is only going to miss a day or 2 then the school may accept as long as it is not during a busy period (for example, an exam period). However, the school is well within its right to reject and expect the child to be at school.

At the moment the government can issue a fine of £100 to parents taking children out of school during term time so carefully consider your options before booking. Travelling abroad on a family holiday can be expensive and would you not be better off saving some money for an extra special one next year?

If your family has their heart set on a family holiday then why not consider holidaying right here in the UK. There are plenty of places where the family can have great fun such as holiday parks where there is fun for all the family with plenty of activities for children and shows in the evening for the adults.

The UK has a lot to offer as a holiday destination with so much culture and superb scenery to take in that many of us did not know even exist. The Lake District is a nice place to visit as it has some wonderful places to walk and enjoy, Skegness is another place where there is always plenty going on.

With a range of destinations in Wales and Scotland to also visit the UK is a great place to visit. Truancy is common in UK schools at the moment but all parents should keep their children in schools despite the lure of a cheap holiday that may be available in the coming weeks.

Why Holiday in the UK this Year?

Although the recession is gradually losing its grip, it’s still a sensible idea to do what we can in order to save our pennies throughout our spending. This can be achieved in various ways, but especially by cutting down large expenses and finding a cheaper way of following through with your plans. Holidays are one such way to cut costs, and it’s very easy to still grab yourself the holiday of your dreams without missing out on too much. In fact, you might even just find that heading off to a recession-proof holiday is the best idea you’ll make this year.

Holidaying in the UK is a new trend that started when the recession first began to take hold. All across the UK, holidaymakers turned to British cities and towns for their destinations of choice as opposed to shelling out on expensive air fares to exotic locations. While the UK can’t exactly be considered ‘exotic’, it certainly is as cultural and diverse as any other location in the world! Sounds doable now, doesn’t it?

There’s so much to choose from in the UK that, once you start doing your research on possible destinations, you could find it hard to choose where to go. Do you want to head to the bustling streets of London and experience city life at its most thrilling? Or perhaps you want to head to the Scottish capital Edinburgh to take in a marvellous city steeped in history. Or if you fancy something more relaxed, then a trip to the Welsh countryside, the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands could be right up your alley. There’s just so much choice that you’ll be astounded you never thought to holiday at home before. Why not visit Manchester and experience the thriving local music scene? You could also head to Nottingham and discover the world of Robin Hood – the perfect way to entertain the kids whilst on a family holiday. If the north is in your sights, the mesmerising city of York is absolutely unmissable and is rivalled by none when it comes to quaint, English streets lined with entertainment and fun.

If you’re really hoping to save some money this year, UK breaks are definitely one of the best ways to protect your wallet without missing out on all of the exploration and newness you’d typically get on a holiday. Even if your heart is set on the beach, the south coasts of England in summer never fail to please – so take the plunge and try having your holiday at home this year. If nothing else, you’ll at least learn just how incredible, beautiful and culturally diverse the UK truly is.

New Year Hotels in the Lake District

A large reason this year is due to the current economic situation. Many people go away for Christmas but it can be costly and at times when things are a little tight, it is a luxury that people may decide to give up. But what about the fact the nights are so dark and Christmas can actually be quite a stressful time of the year. Surely, the perfect time to get away is January?

Taking a break in January celebrates the New Year, recharges the batteries after a hectic and over indulging Christmas and can be one of the best value short breaks you can have. The Lake District is popular choice in January. There are many activities to do in the Lake District along with the possibility of snow still being on the fells. As with hotels and leisure accommodation throughout the country, hotels in the Lake District have excellent rates for January as it is traditionally thought to be the quietest month of the year. This enables the consumer to enjoy short breaks in the Lake District at fabulous prices, much needed after Christmas but especially when everyone is being hit by the economic crisis.

Savvy travellers are noticing the great value deals to be had in the New Year. It makes sense really as the retail industry is famous for having its biggest sale period immediately after Christmas and into the New Year. Holidays are being thought bout for the Spring and Summer but waiting until then without a break is too long to go. A short break in the Lake District can also combine what many require post Christmas, exercise! Canoeing, sailing, walking, mountaineering, fell running, cycling, the list goes on. The most popular, cheapest and most accessible is walking on the hundreds of fells in the Lake District. Wainwright alone walked and wrote about 214 of them but there are many further smaller fells allowing walkers of any age or ability to sample what the English Lake District is famous for.

The weather in the Lake District this Winter has been chilly to say the least! The effect that this has on the landscape is beautiful though. The thick frosts pick out the contours in the fells and highlight them to produce even more spectacular landscapes. Caution must be taken when walking the higher Lakeland fells and proper equipment and clothing must be worn. It is England but it can still be dangerous on higher ground.

Holidaying in the UK: A Growing Trend this Summer

If you intend on holidaying in the UK this summer, you are amongst a growing band of Britons who have turned their back on travelling abroad – at least for now. Economic uncertainty and straightforward prudence mean that rather than shell out thousands of pounds on taking the family abroad people are opting to take their main holiday in the UK.

Let’s face it, the reason most people travel abroad isn’t because there’s nothing to see or do in the UK, but rather that the British summer weather can be a trifle unpredictable. However, now that the nation’s weather forecasters are telling us that this year’s summer is set to be fantastically sunny then that just puts the icing on the cake of holidaying in the UK.

The UK may be a small country, but there is an incredible variety in terms of what’s available for holidaymakers. Being an island helps as there is plenty of shoreline and with a plethora of coastal resorts of varying levels of sophistication. From the traditional ‘kiss me quick’ hats, Pleasure Beach theme park and Tower of Blackpool to the more refined elegance of the Dorset town of Bournemouth; there is something for any family wishing to have a seaside holiday.

Alternatively, with such fantastic spots of natural beauty throughout the UK such as the Lake District, Exmoor, Dartmoor, the Peak District, and so on, there is also plenty of choice for those seeking an activity holiday. Perhaps even a trip to London to see what the capital has to offer such as the UK’s biggest tourist attraction the London Eye, as well as the proliferation of other attractions.

A word of warning, however, if you are intending on holiday in the UK this summer – don’t let thieves or accidents ruin it. Having travel insurance UK is just as important as it would be if you jetted off abroad. The risks associated with a holiday at home are almost identical to travelling abroad and with the exception of your passport just about everything you would take abroad with you will also be packed for a holiday in the UK.

Just imagine how your holiday could soon turn into a nightmare if your wallet or purse was stolen. Away from home you would have to cancel all your cards and therefore have great difficulty in getting any cash. Travel insurance, even if staying in the UK, usually allows for the provision of emergency replacement cash, which may just save the holiday!

Of course, the majority of holidaymakers, whether in the UK or abroad, never have to claim on their travel insurance, but having it allows for peace of mind when travelling, allowing you to enjoy a fabulous holiday!

Environmentally Conscious Lake District Hotels

Many businesses are looking at ways in which to be more environmentally aware green. One such way is by applying for the ISO14001 accreditation. The ISO14001 proves a company’s environmental credentials which in this day and age enhances the corporate image and actually saves the company or organisation money by reducing energy consumption.

The hotel and leisure industry is notorious for its energy consumption. From the hot water and laundry to the on-site facilities such as heated swimming pools, saunas, and Jacuzzis. All are energy intensive and contribute significantly to a hotel’s energy demand and carbon footprint.

The Lake District is seeing an increase in tourism related businesses taking a more serious look at their energy consumption and resulting carbon footprint and are taking action. The larger Lake District hotels and leisure complexes obviously have the most to do but there is help in the form of CBEN, the Cumbria Business Environment Network and supporting tourism partnerships. This area is a haven for walkers and many visitors take a very keen interest in environmental issues.

There are a huge number of ways hotels in the Lake District can improve their carbon footprint. The introduction of alternative, renewable energy generation technologies onsite is one of the biggest but most beneficial to both the environment and the energy bills of the business. In the current climate of rising energy prices, it is beneficial for both. Biomass energy production is being implemented in the area for example in the village of Eskdale and as the location of many Lake District hotels are amongst large managed woodland areas, there is potential availability of raw materials. Installing a biomass burner can save a large hotel up to £35,000 per year on their energy ill although this is dependent on future LPG prices.

Other ways in which a Lake District hotel can implement changes is by installing a charcoal oven, Installing low energy light fittings, minimization of waste and the creation of recycling schemes, solar power, hydro power and new, efficient LPG boilers.

All this action can then be used for marketing purposes. There is not a news bulletin that goes by without an environment story somewhere. A tourism business which has implemented changes such as any of the above have a real unique selling point. They can recoup the costs of installing these alternative energy sources but increase their visitor numbers at the same time so benefitting the environment, the hotel’s profit and the guest’s conscience.

Child Friendly Hotels in the Lake District

Parents however, want a bit of luxury and do not always want to camp or go self catering. Times are changing and hoteliers are waking up to the idea that families are a large market hardly targeted. There are some hotels that operate  strict “no children” policy but many hotels who are quite happy having them stay are adapting rooms and creating fun things for children to do to entice families to stay.

The Lake District is the perfect location for children. Endless activities to keep them occupied for example watersports, walking, Go-Ape, a zoo and the Ravenglass-Eskdale railway. It has long been an area popular with families.

An area full of activities and stunning scenery is the area of Keswick and Bassenthwaite. There are many Keswick hotels that offer child friendly rooms with excellent leisure facilities on site. These facilities include heated swimming pools, gyms, tennis courts, putting greens and some even have games rooms with both board games and computer games such as Wii consoles installed. The practical facilities within these hotels come in the form of flexible meal times for children, the use of complimentary high chairs and cots, bed time books and stocks of essential items such as nappies, baby milks and food and dummies.

The Bassenthwaite Lake area encompasses some of the most well equipped hotels Lake District. The lake is one of the largest in the English Lake District situated at the foot of Skiddaw and in such close proximity to Keswick, it is a great location. The lake is 4 miles long and is the shallowest of all the lakes with its maximum depth just 70 feet. For parents interested in bird watching, it is one of the best places to spot an Osprey.

Bassenthwaite the village itself is one of the most beautiful Lakeland villages and is an ideal base for discovering the woodlands of Thornthwaite Forest and the trails of Dodd Wood. It is the northernmost and only true ‘lake’ in the Lake District; it is renowned for its peacefulness, accessibility and continually changing scenery caused by changeable weather and seasons.

Lake District Holiday Lodges

When most people go on holiday, hotels and guesthouses seem to be popular choices, but with not much to offer other than a room with a bed people are starting to look for alternatives.

The Lake District has been a popular UK holiday destination for years and has a wealth of accommodation options, but none of them really offer the holiday maker anything to write home about. South Lakeland Parks are changing all of that.

By offering holiday makers more of what they want when they go on holiday, South Lakeland Parks’ holiday resorts are becoming a popular choice when it comes to Lake District accommodation. One of the reasons that make them so popular is the range of accommodation, a range that includes holiday lodges.

Lake District Holiday Lodges are a popular choice amongst families and groups of friends that holiday together. Holiday lodges provide more space than a hotel or guesthouse bedroom. As well as offering more space, they also offer a social living room so that everybody that you are on holiday with has a place to socialise without having to eat out or go to a bar.

Of course, this isn’t the only advantage that South Lakeland Parks’ holiday parks offer. Each park has an array of on-site facilities that range from bars and restaurants to swimming pools and an outdoor children’s play area and everything in between, not many Lake District hotels can boast all of that.

South Lakeland Parks have a selection of Lake District Holiday Lodges depending on which holiday park you choose to visit. All three Lake District holiday parks offer Deluxe Lodges and Super Deluxe Lodges, but the popular resort of White Cross Bay also offers a Classic Lodge.

Each lodge has its own style and features, but all lodges include gas and electric, a colour TV, bath and shower facilities, a lounge area and a fully equipped kitchen. The Deluxe Lodges and Super Deluxe Lodges include a DVD player, a radio / CD player, central heating and more. All accommodation includes Leisure Passes so that you can enjoy all of the facilities that each of the parks has to offer.

You will find everything you need in your Lake District Holiday Lodge for your comfort and enjoyment. All you will need to bring are your toiletries, washing up items, and holiday luggage.

Lake District Holiday Parks

UK holiday parks have come a long way since their humble beginnings and are still as popular as ever, especially in areas such as the Lake District. South Lakeland Parks have been operating holiday parks throughout the North West, including two Lake District holiday parks at White Cross Bay and Fallbarrow for the past 20 years.

The reason South Lakeland Parks’ Lake District holiday parks are so popular is that they are great value for money, they have a range of accommodation options, they have quality facilities, there are plenty of recreational resources and have a social and friendly environment.

South Lakeland Parks provide a range of accommodation options across their Lake District holiday parks at affordable prices to suit every budget. From the standard caravan model to the super deluxe lodge you will find everything you need to have a great holiday in the Lake District including bed linen, gas and electric as well as leisure passes.

The range of accommodation at South Lakeland Parks’ Lake District holiday parks means that there really is something to suit all budgets. If you are on a budget holiday, the standard caravans offer simple but comfortable accommodation at great value for money. For that added little luxury the superior caravans offer a higher standard of furnishings and comfort with a modern feel for that little bit extra. The holiday lodges offer plenty of space and comfort for a relaxing holiday. They come with fully equipped kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms and have been tastefully furnished with your comfort in mind. Whichever holiday home you choose you can rest assured that they all offer excellent value for money!

The range of facilities at the Lake District holiday parks mean that all your needs are catered for. Within the parks you’ll find shops, launderettes, free Wi-Fi, takeaways and plenty of other facilities to make your stay more convenient.

The recreational resources available at the Lake District holiday parks are second to none. There are restaurants, bars, entertainment, children’s play areas and so much more. The Lake District holiday park at White Cross Bay also has an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and a sauna which holiday home guests staying at Fallbarrow can use free of charge.

Each of the Lake District holiday parks operated by South Lakeland Parks has a social and friendly atmosphere amongst the people staying there. South Lakeland Parks’ Lake District holiday parks are fantastic places for meeting domestic and international holiday makers.

Buying a Holiday Lodge

We are all becoming more and more environmentally aware of the damage that travelling by airplane and other such transport can do, and it is because of this why we are seeing a rise in the number of people buying holiday lodges throughout the UK.

Holiday lodge ownership is an investment in your family’s leisure time. If you want to start enjoying the benefits of owning a holiday lodge then here are some facts and pointers to get you help you on your way.

The most important things you will need to consider are the location of your holiday lodge, how much you are willing/able to spend and the specific holiday lodge model.

Obviously one of the most important factors when buying a holiday lodge is the location. As this will be somewhere you come to visit once a year, twice a year or much more often, it needs to be somewhere that has plenty going on around it that appeals to you. One of the most popular areas for people to buy a holiday lodge is The Lake District as there are many attractions, facilities and sources of entertainment throughout the year.

By owning a holiday lodge in the Lake District, you’ll never have to worry about finding and booking a hotel or B&B there again. You’ll be able to stay in your own comfortable surroundings and enjoy such attractions as The World of Beatrix Potter, The Aquarium of the Lakes, South Lakes Wild Animal Park, climbing, gill scrambling or rock climbing, horse riding, the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, Windermere Lake Cruises, fishing and golf and so much more.

The next point to consider is your budget. Buying a holiday lodge is obviously more expensive than staying in one for a week, but you are then able to visit as often and for as long as you like. South Lakeland Parks, who are the leading Lake District holiday lodge company have a wide range of holiday lodges for sale in a variety of styles for a variety of prices. A few of the holiday lodges that are available include the Montreal lodge, the Ontario lodge, the New England lodge, the Tay lodge and the Cosmopolitan Eco lodge, each with its own style and charm.

When buying a holiday lodge there are some extra charges to take into account such as the site fees, however South Lakeland Parks operate a Sub-Letting scheme at selected parks, whereby you can hire out your holiday lodge when you’re not staying there and make money from your holiday lodge while South Lakeland Parks take care of everything for you.

Owning a holiday lodge will improve the quality of your family time and your holiday lifestyle as well as giving you the chance to socialise with other holiday lodge owners and meet new friends at exclusive holiday lodge owner events.

Lake District Hotels

There are many hotels and places of accommodation in Ambleside, a town situated in the Lake District. So staying at the place is never an issue due to the large number of places available for your lodging purpose. But the time when you visit the place would surely have an impact on the kind of place where you will be required to stay as well. Instead of putting up in a hotel, it is rather advisable to book a house or a holiday cottage if you happen to visit the place during the summer. The cost that you will have to incur for cottages will be much lesser than what you will have to pay for hotels. This is because the pay is directly related to the property size.

But if you are staying at the place for a very short span of time, then it is better to stay either at a hotel or in a B&B [Bed and breakfast]. Among the two, the latter would be better since the costs would be less, and the staff would be very friendly and homely as well. But the only problem would be the service, which would obviously not be at par with the one offered by a hotel. The problem might arise here as you might have to share the bathroom facility with fellow guests who might have put up at the B&B.

But still, if your plan is to stay in Ambleside for a few days, then there are many hotels available as well, and the budget would definitely range. The luxury hotels would cost about £60 or even more for staying overnight, while the other hotels would cost around £35 for the same time frame as well. So it’s not true that all the hotels are expensive. But if you want to get yourself a good deal, then instead of visiting for a short while, you can plan for a long holiday or a weekend. If you wish to spend a weekend or a break of around three to four days, then many travel agents would provide you with some great deals. The options that they would recommend would not only include the staying expenses, but the food expenses as well.

Cost is not the only factor which should be considered when you make a decision about where to stay at Ambleside. Another factor is the facilities that you wish to have, and the ones being offered by the accommodation that you have selected. But ultimately, this has a direct bearing on the cost, since higher amenities and facilities would obviously raise the overall cost of accommodation.

Also, if your plan is to visit Ambleside during the summers, then it is suggested that you book the accommodation in advance, since the hotels in the Lake District are full with tourists during that time, not only from the United Kingdom, but from many parts of the world. So to avoid any bottlenecks, advance booking of accommodation is the best solution.

Lake District Hotel – A Definition

Defining exactly what constitutes a hotel isn’t easy and when it’s in the UK Lake District it’s harder still. This article attempts to do just that with an example of the perfect Lake District Hotel.

What defines a hotel, as distinct from any other type of accommodation in the Lake District? It’s an odd question isn’t it? and difficult to answer, yet we all know what a hotel is and what isn’t.

The Inland Revenue helpfully point us to a definition given in the hotel proprietors act of 1956 being “…an establishment held out by the proprietor as offering food and drink and, if so required, sleeping accommodation, without special contract, to any traveller presenting himself who appears able and willing to pay a reasonable sum for the services and facilities provided and who is in a fit state to be received.”

Clear as mud then, as a bed and breakfast could fit those criteria if they wanted to, yet clearly it wouldn’t be a hotel in the minds of most people.

Defining a Lake District hotel adds a further layer of complexity.

Establishments many centuries old that may have fitted the label when Wordsworth was a boy, still retain the title but no longer fit with modern perceptions.

I’ll attempt my own definition for a Lake District hotel, see if you agree.

A Lake District hotel should have a minimum of a dozen guest rooms, a public licensed bar, a residents lounge/bar, a car park, a restaurant and preferably a night porter.

Why a dozen rooms? Well there has to be a minimum number and one just doesn’t cut it. Ten might but its decimal, and as we’re talking about the Lake District an English dozen does the trick. In Addition, a hotel should have a certain ambience and that’s only created by having a critical mass of people.

This demotes for example, the Bay Horse Hotel in Ulverston which has only nine rooms to Inn, or Pub. All the other criteria are met, but they’re a little light on the accommodation front.

Similarly a public bar invites transient customers into the establishment which adds a little diversity to the mix. However the residents lounge/bar is a sanctuary for those who choose to stay at the hotel and usually confers some privilege to the residents, for example the ability to purchase drinks after the public bar has closed.

A car park takes the place of perhaps stables in the case of an older establishment. Without sufficient space to park your transport, preferably in the hotel grounds, a little credibility is lost.

That those who seek to rest their heads would prefer to do so on a full belly (or at least a satiated palette) is natural. Standards of food may vary from pretentious to practical and everything in between, but having a restaurant to serve it up is a must for my criteria.

A night porter completes my list. It adds a layer of security helping the residents to sleep soundly and means that assistance is at hand should there be any problems with the room or anything else.

My idea of the perfect Lake District hotel would be the Old Dungeon Ghyll in the Langdale valley. Known to locals as “the old” it just sneaks in on the bedrooms count with a bakers dozen.

The public bar is as lively a place as you could wish to find, populated as it is with locals, fell walkers, climbers and people from the nearby campsite. If you find that all a little too busy, a resident’s lounge and residents bar offer quieter surroundings.

There’s an ample car park and a fine restaurant serving excellent home cooked food backed up by a fine wine list, which complete the picture perfectly.

A night porter? You’ll just have to book and find out for yourself.

Dog Friendly Hotels

Many hotels are extending their dog friendly accommodation welcome by offering to walk their guest’s dogs and supplying beds, blankets, bowls and treats  – and if it is the dog’s birthday, Chef will bake a cake too.

For the 7.4 million UK dog owners the question of where to go on holiday also includes a decision about the dog. While some pets go to friends, family or kennels, many people take their faithful friends with them, but the reality of which dog friendly hotels and guest houses can be another matter.

The Borrowdale Hotel in Borrowdale, Keswick has been looking after dogs since it was built – that’s over 140 years of doggy hospitality. This year the hotel decided to add dog treats to guests rooms, as well as bowls, beds and blankets if needed, but the biggest difference guests will notice is the introduction of a dog walking service.

It means guests who want to take a day trip without their dog can relax in the knowledge that their dog is being exercised by staff – far better than being stuck in a car or room all day. Twice a day they can be taken on a short or long walk around the Borrowdale valley, giving them a chance to smell and experience new places while their masters try something else.

Guests holidaying for 7 nights can indulge their pampered pooches in this dog friendly accommodation with a free dog grooming session – something the hotel thinks will prove popular for some of the longer haired pets that have hiked miles around the Lake District during the week.

Dog friendly hotels in areas such as The Lake District are perfectly situated for dog lovers, with ambling river and lake side walks from the door and more challenging fells all around.

Of course, having the experience of being a dog friendly 140 years hotels such as The Borrowdale have played host to many of the 209 breeds in the UK and they all seem to enjoy it; Labradors, Border Collies and Jack Russells.
